Peg People

Just a quick post today.  I have about a million crafty things to do, but these little people were begging to be made.  They were very fun and a nice change from sewing.  I have a pinterest board with my inspiration for them.

I want to do some more advanced hair for the ladies next time, I did try a braid out for the little girl.

I am thinking about painting a house like this one, but for right now they are living in a "previously owned" home. :)

Gingercake Art Tote Review

I love promoting art to kids, and I love to give art stuff for birthday gifts to Peyton's friends!  I've had the Gingercake Art Caddy Tote pattern for awhile with the intention of making one for Peyton but it had yet to happen.  I finally decided maybe if I made one for a birthday gift I'd actually complete it! :)

Let me start by saying this pattern is not hard at all, just time consuming with all the pockets and layers of material and interfacing.  You need a couple of prints, some cotton batting, interfacing and some stiff pellon interfacing.  Yes, that is ALOT!  However you really do get a nice sturdy tote, which I really liked.

For the fabric I was, again, trying to use what I had in my stash.  (I've been doing well with that goal, although I did place a rather substantial order for fabric last night!)  This Hello Kitty print was planned for an Open Wide Pouch but I think this was a good use too.  My one regret (I am pretty sure I have one after every project even when they turn out well!)  is that I didn't have any super great coordinates to go with the main fabric. I found some yellow and blue which work but I wish it had been better.

The other thing I want to improve on next time is the large pocket (shown in the picture above).  I think it is best used for markers but it doesn't quite keep them as straight as I want (I know I'm a bit OCD).  I think I'd put in vertical lines like on the crayon side for every two or three markers.  You'd just have to adjust the spacing for the size you are using.

The best part is filling it up!  I loved browsing the art supply aisle at Target and picking out things.  It was kind of like back to school shopping which I LOVE!!!  I can't wait to buy Kindergarten supplies this summer! :)  I really need to make one for Peyton now!  Hopefully I can find just the right fabric for her's.  I think I want to use the a print from Ann Kelle's girlfriends line, maybe the ballet dancers!

Thanks reading, I have a dress to share later this week, hopefully! :)

Felt food, Tea Party Time

Felt food is all over the internet and they were some of the first tutorials I bookmarked (so glad we don't have to do it that way anymore!) Thank you Pinterest!!  Anyway, prior to last month I'd never made more than just a couple of things.  But with Peyton's birthday last month I decided to try some again!  She loves to hold tea parties so when I saw an adorable tray at the dollar store I went off in search of tutorials.  I used a variety of tutorials.

Peanut Butter Cookies, Chocolate Chip, Lemon Bars and Frosted Hearts: Made
Cinnamon Roll: Smashed Peas and Carrots
Doughnuts: Skip to My Lou and Craftster

For the cinnamon rolls I made no changes and they turned out SO cute!  I hadn't use puffy paint in ages before making these!  For the lemon bars I tried two ways, one is four layers of felt put together, light brown, 2 yellow and white on top with no stuffing.  For the other one I did 3 layers; one of each color and stuffed it a bit.  I like the four layer one without stuffing the best.

All of the cookies are basically like the ones Dana made except that I added a layer of quilt batting between top and bottom.  I liked it that way, they are a bit more fluffy! :)  Those little chocolate chips made me crazy with all the start and stop sewing!!!

For the doughnuts I combined two tutorials.  I used the pattern from Craftster (I liked the thicker doughnuts) but used the directions from Skip to my Lou.  I always want to do as little hand sewing as possible!! :)  Every time I see the kids playing with these I want a doughnut!!
Finally for the pie slices I made the pumpkin pie with Smashed Peas and Carrots tutorial and it was good but I was still searching so I tried the other and made a slice of blueberry pie and I liked it too.  Basically what I decided was that I liked the pie shape from SPAC and the assembly directions from Sew Mama Sew.  Also I liked the whipped cream from Sew Mama Sew's tutorial better. (they are switched on the pie pieces though) Nothing like being ultra picky! Though that is what I liked about crafting, you can do it however you want!  I really want to make some more food now.  I am thinking healthy food this time.  I want to try these for sure.  Felt Salad, Snap Peas, and broccoli and cauliflower.

Have you made any felt food and if so do you have some good felt food tutorial to share?  I'd love to get some more ideas! Thanks for stopping by!

Happy Valentine's Day!

At our house Valentine's Day has become a big deal.  I never really liked the holiday growing up.  However Peyton's birthday is right around Valentine's Day and so we've become much more partial to the holiday recently.  In fact this was the first year I did any decorating for the holiday.  Here is how we celebrated the holiday this year!

I made a felt heart chain similar to the ones I've seen on Made by Rae and Made.  The little hearts on the tree I envisioned right away when I was thinking about the holiday. Luckily Gordman's had the tree and it worked as planned! :)

Peyton's Valentine's for school are about as difficult as I can handle with all the birthday prep. I've been doing this week. I saw the idea on Pinterest.  I mean where else do you come up with ideas these days? :)  It is a printable from BHG.  I got the little bags at Michaels. I love her 4 year old handwriting!

Finally I made her a shirt to wear today.  I didn't want it to be so holiday that she couldn't wear it after today.  I used some heart fabric I got from Baneberry Place.  Such a great place for knit fabric!  I used my flashback tee pattern.  This is the best one I've turned out yet!  The skirt is from Target.

I also had to make a bow!  I used a tutorial by Prudent Baby.  Nice and easy!

Are you a fan of today?  I wish everyone a day filled with love!  Thanks for visiting!

15" Doll Pajamas Tutorial

I've been busy this week perfecting my doll pj's for Peyton's 15" Disney Princess Toddler doll.  I am quite happy to have it all wrapped up and ready to share.

First off you'll need the two pattern pages.  For the shirt click here and for the pants click here to download them.  If you haven't used google docs before you click the arrow in the left hand corner to download the files.

For the shirt you'll need knit fabric.  With the pants you can use pretty much anything.  I did a couple with flannel and then a pair with corduroy.  I am thinking about slimming the pattern down and trying leggings with a knit fabric in the future.  Your other materials will be about 4" of velcro.  I cut some wider stuff I had in half, but really any width between 1/4" and 1/2" will work.  And Fold Over Elastic (FOE).  You'll need 14.5" total.  I like to pick mine up when Pick your Plum has a sale but you can get it at JoAnn's.  It seems to be popping up more all the time.  I used it for this project since it does the binding and gathering all in one step and gives a nice finished look. (Plus I have lots of it, and just ordered more!)

Once you have your pattern pieces all cut out we are ready to go!  We will be making the pants first.  All seams are 1/4" unless I tell you otherwise.  Also I do have a serger, so I used it to finish my seams.  But it isn't necessary.  The top is knit so that won't fray and for the pants if it frays it's not a big deal, if you are picky like me you could do a zigzag stitch to finish your seams if you want.

1) First sew a 1/2" hem on the bottom of each pant piece.  It is much easier to do this now than when it is a tiny circle later. :)

2) Next we will sew the pant legs down the inseam.  Start at the point and sew to the hem.  Don't sew up the crotch in this step!

3)  Now turn one leg right side out and insert it into the other leg with right sides together.

4)  Next we'll sew the crotch, this will give you a nearly finished pair of pants.  I didn't take a picture of this step, but just go slowly and work the rounded seam through your machine.

5)  Moving on, take your 7.5" piece of elastic and sew it into a circle with a 1/4" seam.  Then mark the half way point of the circle.  You want a front and back mark (back mark is your seam) to help with lining it up on the pants.  I mistakenly marked 2 other points but since their isn't a side seam on these pants that isn't necessary.  The place where the circle is sewn together matches to the back of the pants and the other mark goes on the front seam of the pants.

6) Now pin the elastic to the pants right sides together and sew the elastic on. The top of the pants should match up with the top of edge of the elastic.  Sew with a 1/4" seams, that should be matching up with the center line on the elastic.  Stretch the elastic as you go to make it lay flat against the pants.  I didn't get a picture of the pinning part.  (working late at night has it's downfalls)  Here is the pants once the elastic is sewn on.

7) Finished! I like to iron when I'm done to make everything look nicer.  If I was really good I'd iron after each step but I usually forget!  The raw edge of the pants will fold down leaving a nice finished waist.

Now we'll work on the shirt.  Let me also mention that while I am calling these pajama's depending on the fabric you pick and how you finish them they are just a basic pair of pants and shirt.

1) First cut out your pieces and start by sewing the shoulders together using a 1/4" seam.  (Again all seams are 1/4" unless I mention something different.)

 2)  Next we'll sew the sleeves onto the bodice.  Take your time here, when sewing tiny things you have to be patient. :)  (At least that is what I tell myself)

3)  We can now hem the sleeves.  Use a 1/2" hem here.

4)  Now we sew down the arm and side.  Pin first, make sure you put a pin in the armpit matching up your seams.

 5)  Next we'll sew the hem at the bottom of the shirt.  Do this with a 1/2" hem as well.

6) Things are coming along nicely. We should have something that looks like a shirt.  Onto the FOE for the neck.  Take the remaining 7" piece of elastic and mark the mid-point.  Next with the back of the elastic and the back of your shirt touching pin it together.  Match the center mark on the elastic with the center of the shirt.  Use the line in the center of the elastic to match up the edge of the fabric with.  I first pin the mid-point and then the ends and then stretch to pin the rest.

7)   Now sew that on, stretching the elastic as you go to make it lay flat.  See my fingers at the bottom of the picture, I'm pulling gently on the elastic.

8)  Then fold the elastic back over the edge of the fabric to enclose it.  Sew that down, stretching the elastic as you go once more.

 9) All we have left is the back!  Fold over each side by 1/2" and sew it down.

10) Finally we'll attach the velcro.  Take one of your pieces and pin it to the outside of the shirt and the on other on the inside as shown.  Sew the velcro on and your done!  Again I would iron it so it lays nicely.

You can add a design on the front if you want.  I did it for one shirt.  To do it I simply cut out the image I wanted and used Wonder Under to adhere it to the shirt and then sewed around it.

Here are the 3 outfits I made.  The are wildly popular with my daughter but of course now she has a whole list of other clothes she wants. :)

I hope the pajamas you make are well loved too :)  Please let me know if you have any questions.  I always wonder how much to say and how much people already know.  Thanks for stopping by, feel free to leave a comment they truly make my day!

Dressing Up Dolly

Dressing Up Dolly

I'm doing my first guest post this month over at Nap Time Crafters!  Yeah, I'm super excited!  The series should be really fun!  All month long there will be patterns and tutorials for dolls and barbies from different bloggers and the fun starts today!

My daughter has been asking for dolly clothes for her Cinderella toddler doll since she got her on Christmas morning!  I kept telling her I'd get to it.  When I saw that Amy was doing this fun series I signed up thinking it would get me motivated to sew some clothes.

And well...it has!  I am hoping to have a pajama tutorial later this week to share here, and then later in the month I'll have another clothing tutorial for Dressing up Dolly!  One more thing, her Cinderella doll is a 15" doll so a little smaller than the 18" American Girl dolls that seem to have most of the clothing tutorials floating around out there.  :)  Hope you'll check out Dressing up Dolly and I'll be back later this week with some jammies for Cinderella.

Projects to start the new year!

I don't know about others, but for me when I have a deadline to sew for, like say Christmas I get a little burned out creatively.  What is it about HAVING to sew that makes it less fun?  I am anxious to get back to "real" sewing and have quite a few dresses and bigger projects brewing.

This week I've gotten a couple of small projects done to keep me happy while trying to get life back to normal after Christmas.  The first one was an Open Wide Pouch from Anna at Noodlehead.  I've wanted to make this since she shared the tutorial but it hadn't happened.  Then early this week I wandered into my local quilt shop and all the stars aligned.  There was some fun fabric right by the door that was new in the shop and then I glanced to the right and all the beautiful colored zippers were glowing in the sunshine and I bought some fabric and a matching zipper!!
I made the biggest size, cause bigger is always better right?  It went together so easily and I loved how the zipper is finished.  I can see myself making lots of these. The striped fabric on the outside is by French Bull manufactured by Windham Fabrics the line is Multi Dot.  It just looked so bright I couldn't resist!  The inside is a Moda fabric from the Hoopla line, it was in my stash.  It is currently holding Peyton's little princess dolls but I might be re-claiming it soon!

Then I decided to make a fleece pillow case for one of my daughter's friends who is having surgery today.  She likes cats and I found the perfect print at Hancock's.  I used this tutorial that I've used before, it is so easy and just takes a 1/2 yard of fleece. Peyton tried it out and approved before we gave it to her.  Her friend loved it, and that was really all I wanted.

I love quick projects, instant gratification is sometimes quite nice. Now onto the next project!
